Mt. Washington Tavern (A Valentine's Happy Hour Reviewed)

For those of us who remember the original Mt. Washington Tavern, the revision may be a shock to the system. Once you take in the new dark wood and modern steel accents, you realize the same old regulars are sitting at the bar so it can't be that different, right? WRONG....this place is all the fun it used to be with a crowd to match. Sure the middle-aged Mt. Washington dwellers nursing Bohs and hogging the bartenders are still there, but then there is a multitude of young professionals (seems about 25-35 years old) sipping craft beers, noshing on daily free apps (read free oysters on Thursdays, shrimp on Fridays...etc.) and generally bringing the mean age of customers down about 30 years. Despite our affinity for the old Tavern's lax ID-checking and super laissez-faire attitude, we wholly approve of the grown-up version of the Mt. Washington Tavern.

Of course, we also have to share a little Valentine's Day blunder...

A certain friend of ours, who shall remain nameless but not shameless, had romantic dinner reservations with his girlfriend. He told her he was joining us for happy hour but she declined the invite to come along. She said she would meet him at the restaurant at 8PM.

Several shots, beers and hilarious conversations later...our friend was having so much fun at the Happy Hour Crew's happy hour that he did not check his watch until almost 8PM. The other wrinkle was that our buddy was relying on his father for a ride to dinner (his car is in the shop, we don't invite 15 year olds to happy hour, we promise). We wish we could have gotten video of our friend madly searching for his father come 7:57PM. His poor girlfriend was waiting at the restaurant...we are guessing not happily.

The moral of the story:WE ARE SO COOL PEOPLE MISS VALENTINES!!!

RATING:

Music: Not really audible in the bar, but can hear good alternative rock in the bathrooms. Several flat-screen TVs sorround the bar area, usually playing various sports and ESPN programming.

Seating: Two bars downstairs, both consistentely crowded but decent amount of seating. There are also some ledges to lean on while drinking or eating. A third bar upstairs, the SkyBar, features a beautiful outdoor deck. Table service is available upstairs and downstairs as well.

Price: The prices are reasonable. $7 - $10 for wine, beer, cocktails. TONS of specials - bar specials on weeknights AND restaurant specials all week (see the bottom of this post).

Food: The Tavern has stepped it up in this department. Gone are the stodgy plates our grandmothers favored. The fare is updated Tavern style with appetizers like crispy calamari and crab wontons, and sandwiches, salads and full entrees. We highly recommend their entree salads - heavy on the goods like crab or steak as well as their hefty burgers.

Parking: Street parking can be difficult but but available. The Tavern has a lot which is usually full by 5PM. Valet service is available and quite nice for $4.

Overall: 8.5 out of 10 because the bartenders can be a little less than attentive. Let's remember that these are the same bartenders from the original Tavern...you can't change too much, right? NO, they need to upgrade on the bar service, but the atmosphere, drinks and food are so appealing, it's worth the extra five minutes. Besides, complaining about a surly bartender is an excellent way to strike up a conversation with that hot guy or gal next to you.
